Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old Army veteran whose home in Escondido, California, became famous for its American flags and pro-Trump decorations, has died.
The man accused of beating him outside his front door now faces possible murder charges.
In about a week, a family’s GoFundMe effort has raised almost $50,000. Neighbors and strangers have all come together to help the Sheron family.
The 32-year-old Navy veteran Thomas Caleb Butler is still in jail without bail after being charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats, and violence in connection with the attack on May 20
Since Sheron’s death was confirmed last Sunday, Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia said he might raise those charges. Butler could be formally re-arrested as early as June 4, and charges linked to murder are being considered.
The attack’s facts are terrible.
The New York Post reported that Garcia told the court what happened next: “It was a single punch to the jaw. The victim then falls to the floor, and there are subsequent hits to the victim’s head area.”
Local news outlets got hold of security footage that showed Butler walking up to Sheron outside of his Buchanan Street home and starting what prosecutors call an unprovoked attack
A bystander nearby tried to interfere. Butler ran off on foot. He was soon found and apprehended by the police.
He progressively worsened from the serious head trauma.
His wife, Maria Sheron, told reporters there was ‘no hope’ for her husband. He died on Sunday, five days after the incident.
Sheron was transported to a hospital with what doctors called catastrophic injuries
Sheron became well known for his pro-America and President Donald Trump-themed residence in southern California.

The attack happened outside Sheron’s house, which had been the subject of complaints and vandalism for years.

Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia described the brutal attack, reportedly by 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler.
A friend of Butler’s said he was a Navy veteran with PTSD.
The California Post quoted the acquaintance as saying that Butler “sits in his room and thinks everyone is coming to get him” and that his condition was worsened despite treatment.
The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is “reviewing the circumstances to determine whether charges will be amended,” police said
“This is the guy that plays with Legos and Star Wars stuff,” Butler’s friend reportedly said.
They located a male, later identified as Sheron, “suffering from significant injuries.”
Police said a bystander who interfered during the alleged incident was also injured.
Around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Escondido, California, police officers responded to reports of an assault at the intersection of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, adjacent to the “Trump House.”
Garcia also believed the attack was politically motivated.
“He tried to kill my husband, you know,” she told CBS 8. “It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hate… what heart, the black heart.”
I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is [a] veteran,” she said.

The home, known throughout the San Diego area as the “Trump House,” has long been covered in American flags, patriotic decorations, and pro-Trump displays.
Garcia suggested the visible patriotic displays may have fueled hostility.
