Venezuelan Migrant Arrested After Chicago Student Fatally Shot Near Campus

Loyola Student Fatally Shot in Chicago Lakefront Attack

Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old student at Loyola University Chicago, was shot and killed along the city’s lakefront shortly after 1:30 a.m. Thursday. She had been walking with friends when a masked gunman opened fire, striking her in the head. Gorman died at the scene. The sudden tragedy has left her family, friends, and the university community grieving. Originally from Westchester County, New York, she had been planning a summer visit to Chicago with her family. Instead, they are now preparing for her funeral. Loyola University Chicago President Mark C. Reed confirmed her death in a message to students, calling it a profound loss and offering condolences.

Police quickly identified and detained a suspect. A 25-year-old Venezuelan man, Jose Medina-Medina, is in custody. According to records obtained by the Chicago Tribune, investigators were able to locate him within minutes due to a “distinct limp.” Authorities have not yet confirmed whether formal charges have been filed in connection with the case.

The incident has also drawn attention to the suspect’s prior encounters with U.S. authorities. Officials said he was first apprehended by Border Patrol in May 2023 and later arrested in Chicago for shoplifting in June of that year before being released. These details have fueled debate over immigration enforcement policies.

Federal officials have criticized past decisions that allowed his release, urging state and local leaders to ensure he remains in custody. The case has intensified national discussions about public safety, immigration policy, and accountability.
