On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, three-time NC State alumna Christina Koch is scheduled to lift off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on humanity’s first trip to the moon in over 50 years. If the weather holds, Koch and three other astronauts will launch on a 10-day trip that will include a lunar flyby before their Orion spacecraft returns to Earth.

Below is a timeline featuring highlights of Koch’s personal life, academic achievements and professional career.

  • Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

  • Moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina.

  • Graduated from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.
